Police Plaque Engraving Checker

Enter the inscription one line per row, rank and badge number included, and set how many characters each line may use. The Shield Recognition checker tallies every letter, space and period and flags any line past that limit. Treat it as a draft check: the count cannot show how text sits on walnut or acrylic, so the proof still decides the fit.

Build your plan

Counts include spaces and punctuation. Character count cannot establish physical fit: font, script, layout, material and engraving area require a proof at actual size.

The decision behind a department recognition order

Keep service recognition separate from the language of a formal commendation. The department should approve the exact title, badge details and public text. Where a plaque incorporates insignia, confirm the approved artwork and permission rather than recreating details from a low-resolution image.

Keep with your brief: Approved rank, unit, badge details and commendation text.

Understand what the result means

Visible characters per line, including spaces and punctuation; longest line compared with your chosen budget

A line marked within budget still needs a production proof. A narrow inscription area, a wide font, a logo beside the text or a different script can change the usable layout. Send the exact text together with the intended product and dimensions so those choices can be considered together.

What happens when the rank and the name will not share a line?

An association secretary is drafting the Police Service & Bravery Plaque for a deputy chief. Typed on one line, Deputy Chief Maria Castellanos-Whitfield is forty characters, over the thirty-two she set as a budget. She moves the rank to its own line above the name. Deputy Chief is twelve characters and Maria Castellanos-Whitfield is twenty-seven, so both pass. The recognition line, Distinguished Service Award, is also twenty-seven. She then runs the other recipients and finds every name fits with the rank stacked. She asks Shield Recognition to stack rank over name on all the plaques, so the set looks planned.

Check these details before using the result

Abbreviating a rank to make it fit
Do not shorten Lieutenant on one plaque only. Pick one form for the whole set, or move the rank to its own line.
Dropping an officer's hyphen or suffix
Count the name the way the officer writes it, with a suffix, a hyphen or an accent. Ask the officer before changing any of it.
Treating a pass as a fit on the shield
A line under budget can still crowd a shield-shaped plate near its narrow point. Wait for the proof before telling the group it fits.

Questions about this checker

How many characters fit on a police plaque line?

There is no fixed number. It depends on the plate width, the lettering style and the letter height, and a shield outline narrows toward the bottom. Treat your character budget as a drafting limit for the plaque. Send Shield Recognition your longest name and title, and the layout is sized around that line.

Should the badge number have its own line?

Usually yes. A badge number beside a name lengthens the longest line on the plaque, and it reads more clearly alone, for example Badge 0417 under the name. Test both versions in the checker. If the recipient prefers not to show the number at home, leaving it out also shortens the layout.

Badge-shaped presentation plaques and artwork briefs

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, turn a badge-shaped concept into an approved artwork brief without implying that every decorative shield reproduces an official badge.

Plan law enforcement service gifts across departments

Build the order around the approved occasion, recipient details and display location. A retirement plaque, a commendation and a shared department record should not inherit the same wording automatically. Keep authorized artwork and exact service dates attached to each proof.

One recipient with several law enforcement awards

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, count the physical pieces for each law enforcement recipient without merging distinct awards or duplicating one combined gift.

Open versus covered police challenge-coin displays

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, choose an open challenge-coin display when regular access and rearrangement are priorities, and a covered display when the owner wants a defined enclosure. Compare usable internal space, viewing access and the actual closure. A cover does not by itself establish preservation performance, security or included coins.
