Police Award Quantity Calculator

To count a police recognition order, multiply the number of recipients by the pieces each one receives, then add shared pieces such as a unit award and any spares you choose. This Shield Recognition calculator does that sum from your own figures. It does not suggest a buffer or decide which officers are recognized.

Set spares yourself. This calculates the quantities you enter; it does not assume a recommended buffer.

The decision behind a department recognition order

Keep service recognition separate from the language of a formal commendation. The department should approve the exact title, badge details and public text. Where a plaque incorporates insignia, confirm the approved artwork and permission rather than recreating details from a low-resolution image.

Keep with your brief: Approved rank, unit, badge details and commendation text.

Understand what the result means

(Units × pieces per unit) + additional category pieces + spare pieces

The total is a physical inventory count. It does not determine the number of unique artwork files, names, packages or delivery destinations. Keep those details alongside the result so the quote can distinguish repeated designs from individually personalized pieces.

How would a department awards committee use the count?

A lieutenant chairs the committee for the yearly awards night. Ten officers will each receive a Badge-Style Acrylic Award, and the traffic unit gets one shared piece for the squad room. She enters ten people, one piece each, and one additional category piece. No spares. The total is eleven. Before sending that figure to Shield Recognition she writes what it covers: ten individual awards with different names and titles, and one unit award with different wording. Then the chief adds two civilian employees to the list. She changes ten to twelve and the total becomes thirteen, which is the number that goes in the quote request.

Check these details before using the result

Counting a unit award per member
Decide whether a unit citation is one piece for the squad room or one per officer. That choice can multiply the order.
Leaving out civilian staff
Dispatchers, records clerks and volunteers are often added late. Ask the chief's office for the full list before you total.
Ordering a spare plaque without a purpose
A blank spare and a remake of one name are different items. Say what a spare is for before entering it.

Choose the details the recipient values most, such as a unit or assignment, rather than listing an entire career. Confirm whether badge and rank information should appear on a gift intended for home display.

Questions about this calculator

Does the calculator add spare police plaques on its own?

No. Only the spares you type are added to the police order count. For engraved police awards a spare is rarely useful unless it is left blank for a late addition, since a plaque with one officer's name cannot be handed to another. If you want a blank piece, say so in the quote request.

How do I count family copies of a memorial or retirement plaque?

Treat each family copy as its own piece. If one retiree's plaque is ordered with a smaller copy for a parent, enter two pieces for that person, or add the copy as an additional piece. Note the size difference when you send the count, because the calculator does not record sizes.

Badge-shaped presentation plaques and artwork briefs

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, turn a badge-shaped concept into an approved artwork brief without implying that every decorative shield reproduces an official badge.

Plan law enforcement service gifts across departments

Build the order around the approved occasion, recipient details and display location. A retirement plaque, a commendation and a shared department record should not inherit the same wording automatically. Keep authorized artwork and exact service dates attached to each proof.

One recipient with several law enforcement awards

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, count the physical pieces for each law enforcement recipient without merging distinct awards or duplicating one combined gift.

Open versus covered police challenge-coin displays

For worldwide Shield Recognition orders, choose an open challenge-coin display when regular access and rearrangement are priorities, and a covered display when the owner wants a defined enclosure. Compare usable internal space, viewing access and the actual closure. A cover does not by itself establish preservation performance, security or included coins.
